Machine stops booting with this message. In the CMOS
setup utility, the stats for the hard drive are listed,
but hard drive is not detected. When Windows XP attempts
to launch, I receive an error that there is no hard drive
found.

Not sure if this is the hard drive or the controller.
How can I check to be sure of what I need to replace on
my meager budget???

Motherboards have two IDE connectors. Move the drives to the other one and
see what you get.

Also, controller cards are not the expensive, or try to borrow one.

Thanks for the response. If I simply plug the drive into
the other connector do I have to reconfigure the hard
drive at all to make it appear as a slave, or make
changes on the CMOS?

You shouldn't have to reconfigure the drive's jumpers just to
quickly test it, but you may have to do so if you leave it there and
then also connect another drive, such as the CDROM, to the same ribbon
cable and IDE controller. You may have to adjust the BIOS, but most
modern ones will auto-detect the new arrangement.
