Im thinking of getting a new rig, probably just after the new year because I
think thats when prices will be lowered. Does that sound right?

Sounds about right.
Personally, I stay about 12 months behind the latest
technology.
That way, most of the bugs are ironed out, good choices
can be made.
And best of all the prices are more realistic.

Memory might be a bit lower, but in general the lowest
prices are had by buying an item at a time when that
particular item is on sale or discount. Any given part
might be cheaper just because a passing of time has caused
it to technologically depreciate, but as a whole, finished
systems probably won't substantially drop in price, if
anything the move to Vista was expected to raise whole
system prices by 10% or more... but then part if this was
due to the higher requirements like DX10 video and
especially more memory, as well as slightly higher cost OS.

Buy what you want when you want it, if prices were that easy
to predict, nobody would be buying now and that alone would
make the prices drop... so we'd be back to square one.
