prices too high for adwords

The best conversion website on the net is home shopping club. with about 50 percent conversion. mostly because of the preadvertised offer. Ive noticed people are paying 2-3 bucks a click now on adwords.. selling products that cost 50 bucks.. How in the heck are they able to maintain this? Constantly losing money seemingly just throwing it away. ?
 
Adwords can be very expensive depending on what you advertise - £2/$2 and over isn't uncommon for some competitive keywords, as people are willing to accept lower and lower margins. :(
