preview window sticks on pause

When ever I am viewing my clips in the preview window then stop it when I start it again the picture that is showing stays in pause but it says it is playing and the counter is counting and the blue line is moving across the timeline. Or if I move the blue line in the timeline it changes to a frame in the clip I have moved it to but stays in that frame in the preview window and everything else shows it is still "playing". Can anyone help me with this? I am trying to add titles to some of the clips and can't do it if it keeps staying on one frame
Thanks, Barb

Barb,

During preview, MM2 and your computer will drop whatever info is needed in
order to keep up with the need to play the project in real time.... so your
symptoms are such that maybe a good tune-up is needed. Clear up hard drive
space, defrag it, and run MM2 with a minimal amount of other apps open.

Hello Barb,

There are a couple of Tutorials / FAQ's on my web site that will help you
out....check out "Speed"

I do the harddrive cleanup and the defrag regularly and my computer is less than a year old (HP 854N). I have tried using MM2 without anything else running not even my internet conection and the preview window still stays on one frame in the preview window when ever I try to move the blueline in the timeline to another place in the timeline. This program seems to have a lot of cliches. Do you know of some other movie making software that doesn't have all these problems? I love all MM2 features but it is a PAIN to use when you get stuck and can't do anything to go on to finish your movie
Thanks, Bar

Hi Barb,

With regards to the Defrag. If you are using the Defrag option that
comes with XP then you would still have problems. This because the defrag
that comes with XP does not get rid of the sometimes large gaps between
files. The consequence is that whilst the files are individually contiguous,
the free space becomes less contiguous. You will see an improvement
dependent on exactly how much there is on the target file if you use a
dedicated defragmenter. The one that comes with Symantec Systemworks does
rather a good job, I expect that there are others "out there" as well.

On the what other program front, there is always the significantly more
advanced MovieXone (free version) or the even more advanced MovieDV 6 (US
$69) from www.aist.de The options in both of these programs require a
steeper learning curve, but the possibilities and end results are well worth
it.

Best Wishes.....John Kelly

Barb,

You certainly have more than enough computer power, but it sounds like the
issues run deeper than MM2. Changing to other video editing software may not
resolve whatever it is.

Maybe browsing my Problem Solving section will give you some ideas....

I messed with this again all day yesteday and it seems it is only happening with video that I captured from VHS using Movie Mill. I made a movie using pictures and it does not happen with that and there was a demo video that came on my computer that I tried too and that doesn't get stuck on pause either. The one I am having problems with is very old home movies that don't even have sound. So I am trying to add subtitles to scenes but when I try to advance or go back to a scene in the timeline that scene freezes in the preview window but the timeline keeps moving. It is driving me nuts
I have the book Zero To Hero but can't find anything in there to help me or on either one of the websites mentioned here
Anyone have anymore ideas what I can do
Thanks,Barb

Hi there,

I am not familiure with movie mill, but it does rather sound as though
whatever format file it has created in the past is not now compatible with
the type of file that Movie Maker requires as an input.

What format (file name extention) are these old videos in. Is it AVI, MOV
or ASF ? etc

Hi Barb,

The online info about Movie Mill shows that it captures as MPEG1 or 2 files,
and doesn't offer any options to then convert it to something that MM2 can
better work with, like AVI.

If you're using the MPEG2 option for better quality, but your source is old
home movies... maybe the MPEG1 option would work.

Another option might be using MM1. I'd try to import the file into either
MM1 or MM2 as a single clip, and then save it as a high quality WMV file for
further project use.

And TMPGEnc is the best MPEG tool.... use it to convert the MPEG1 or 2 files
to AVI and MM2 should work with it fine.... there's a link to TMPGEnc on my
Setup > Software page.

Hi, Bar
I have the same problem that you descibed. My video and audio are often out of synch in the preview mode! Since my video is a whole hour long, it's very frustrating:(
I did read that when you are capturing the video, you should NOT click on "Watch During Preview"...some computers have trouble when you do it that way. The good new is that when I save the movie and send it back to my digital camera, the sticking is gone?!?!
But I am worried that it's going to happen again. If you figure it out, could you please share your good luck with me
Thanks and good luck!
