Preview pane shows nothing - only flickers

I have Movie Maker 2.1 (from SP2) and my preview pane won't show anything.
Sometimes it will show the first frame of a video but it doesn't play. All
the options are greyed out so you can't press play...change size...go full
size...or anything. The title above the preview just kind of flickers.
Sometimes when I switch from another window it's like see through and you can
see the window behind it through the preview part. Videos play fine once
they are exported but it kind of sucks making movies when you can' preview
them!!

I've tried reinstalling...changing hardware acceleration
settings...reinstalling directx...Any suggestions?

Oh yeah - I have a 1.6 Ghz Athlon w/ 512m ram

This indeed looks like a directx problem or your display card driver. Try
reinstalling the latest stable drivers.

What format are the videos ?

Have you tried switching off the codecs/dlls from the
Tools->Options->Compatibiliy?

I just reinstalled my video card drivers...it's an ati radeon 7500 w/ tv out

All kinds....even jpg images

Yeah..I just tried that, still nothing.

Thanks for you help though...does anyone else have any ideas?

I ran into a simular problem when I transfered a mpeg from a local ethernet
networked computer. Only thing I can figure is server side issues. They have
a AXc now?

I have the EXACT same problem but I can't seem to fix it. At one point the
options on the preview pane weren't greyed out but when I pressed play a
window came up saying "Class not Resgistered". I have an athlon xp and a
radoen 9200 as well as the latest version of direct x - still no fix.

ditto. same here on all counts. only mentioning this to encourage some
support from tech support if perhaps anyone notices a pattern.

The only other thing I can offer in my situaiton is that I was using Movie
Maker this afternoon for quite a while. Then I plaed back a DVD using
Intervideo WinDVD, the I thought it would be interesting to try to add a DVD
viewer plugin to Winamp. Then I left for about an hour, came back, and when I
opened Movie Maker again, I had the problem described in this thread.

I naturally assumed it was a problem with that plugin, so I uninstalled
Winamp and the plugin, and then went into Windows Media Player (thinking it
was somehow at fault) and set up ever file type in the options for use by
WMP.

Alas, none of this mattered.

Hope someone figures it out.

I have the same problem.

Everything worked a couple weeks ago, but now all commands and buttons on
the preview window are greyed out, and the window itself is flickering/black.

Brand new PC, P4 with intel graphics media accelerator, came with Service
Pack 2 pre-installed, Windows XP home edition Japanese version.

I think this happened when I upgraded media player to 10, but I tried
restoring it to 9 and that didn't help. Tried installing Windows Media
Encoder but nothing changed. After looking at bwackensquork's post I think
it might be related to the PowerPlayer WinAmp plugin, but like he said,
uninstalling it doesn't fix the problem.

I really hope someone has an idea about how to fix this, because MM is
useless if you can't preview.

I also posted on the Movie Maker forums, but no progress there yet either.

I don't know if this will work for anyone else, but I just tried uninstalling
my divx and then installing the k-lite codec pack. Now preview works again.
I have no idea why this worked, but it might be worth a try for others with
the same problem.

Of course, the powerplayer plugin on winamp can't paly .mov files now, but I
can live with that.

I als was able to fix the problem, by running a system restore. This to me
was unacceptable as a means of fixing, but after a longhard look at the
system it seemed the only hope. It did work, but shouldn't have een necessary.

If I had to guess, I'd say there's something to do with other apps grabbing
ownership of file type associations, but I couldn't swear to it.

Good luck all.
