preview of templates unavailable

'Whenever I save my own templates in word, they never seem to have previews.
When I then try to select my own template I always get 'preview unavailable'
in the dialog box. A preview would be very useful, how can I get around this?

In order to have a preview, you need to check the "Save preview picture" box
on the Summary tab of File | Properties. Note, however, that previews are
useless for most templates and that any document based on a template with a
preview will by default also have a preview, which significantly increases
file size.

Suzanne,
Thanks for taking the trouble to reply - in fact preview is very helpful and
it is possible to discern differences in templates very quickly. However,
running Office 2003 and XP sp2 I can't find the box 'Save preview picture'
that you mention, presumably on the properties of the dot file itself. Are we
running different versions or am I doing something stupid (more than likely)
All the supplied templates from MS have previews, but when I look at the file
properties I can't discern any differences - it's really beginning to bug me!

In every version of Word, if you open File | Properties and look at the
Summary tab, there is a "Save preview picture" check box in the lower left
corner. If you have "Prompt for document properties" checked on the Save tab
of Tools | Options, this dialog/tab will be presented automatically when you
save a new document, and you can cancel the preview for documents based on
the template.

Thank you, now it's cracked. I've being using Word for more years than I can
remember, and have never used (or noticed) that properties option. A useful
discovery, thanks so much.
