Saving a thumbnail of the file (save Preview) in the 2007 format is almost
identical to saving a document with a small image. The size it adds is
minimal and since the new files sizes are about 75% smaller than the *.doc
format, even if you save a thumbnail with the document it's still smaller
than before. (During the beta I tested the thumbnail and tried to force the
same file bloat we see in previous versions, such as adding a table at the
top of the document with dashed or dotted borders, and wasn't able to
reproduce the behavior.)
Here's an example of file size using a blank document:
Word 97-2003 (no thumbnail): 31 KB
Word 2007 (no thumbnail): 13 KB
Word 2007 (thumbnail saved): 23 KB
The main advantage of saving a document with a thumbnail when using Windows
Vista is the larger thumbnail views when viewing documents in an Exploring
window. Also, the Open and Save As dialog boxes have the "Save Thumbnail"
option in the dialog box so it's no longer buried away.
