Preview is very slow in Outlook 2002

If I select a different message, it takes several seconds
to show the message in the preview window. In the past
the delay was not noticeable. Does anyone have a
suggestion how to correct.

You can either disable Instant Messaging, or set it to run in the
background. Tools->Options->Other for disabling. On the Tools->options
menu in IM.

I don't think that addresses the question. I have the
same problem (it can take 5-10 seconds for the selected
message to show in the Preview window) and already have
Instant Messaging disabled.

I am having the same problem that a number of other
people seem to have mentioned recently in this
newsgroup. The message preview pane takes 5-10 seconds
to display a message every time you click on a new
message or a new folder or anything. Considering it used
to take only a fraction of a second, with this slowdown
it has become incredibly frustrating and I want to throw
my laptop through the window every time I try to access
email.

Outlook was working fine, with a very fast preview, until
a week ago. That was when I discovered the Office Update
website and installed first the Office XP SP-1 upgrade
and then straight after the Office XP SP-2 upgrade. That
is when the painfully slow preview problem started. I've
searched Microsoft's Outlook 2002 support site but there
seems to be no official recognition of this problem.

If I switch the preview pane off, it still stalls for the
same 5-10 seconds when you double click to open an email
in its own window, and I've tried it with Instant
Messaging both on & off and the problem still happens.

Does anyone know of a fix to this?

Thanks,
Mark Hobba.

I'm running Outlook 2000 SP-3. (9.0.0.6627). You may want to make sure you
have the most recent upgrades installed.

Speed can also have to do with concurrently open programs that have nothing
at all to do with the internet. All sorts of background stuff - like
antivirus software and clocks, and Messenger, and who knows what - but it
sounds like your PC has enough horsepower to handle a reasonable load. I'd
simply suggest you try working with Outlook and everything else closed to
see if it makes a difference.

Also, you want to make the .pst file as small as possible, so empty the
deleted items folder (entirely or at least anything older than a month or
two) and establish auto-archiving at your preference level. The smaller the
..pst file, the faster Outlook will work.

Sorry, just noticed you said 2002 vs 2000. You know more about the upgrades
than I do. The rest of what I said is still correct.

Dang, I have to stop burning the candle at both ends! LOL!

Well it worked for me. I was having the exact same
problem you described but disabling IM stopped the
annoying delay.
