I have a machine that is acting most strangely.
It's a Windows ME machine running Norton Internet Security 2003
On boot into WinME, dial-up networking tries to connect to the internet
by displaying a DUN dialogue connection box.
If you press "cancel", then it tries again, 3 or 4 times before finally
giving up.
At this point, NIS will load.
All the time the connectoid is displayed, then NIS will not load.
I have left the connectoid alone, and tried to start NIS manually using
the shortcuts in the START menu, but when starting both the firewall and
the AV side of things, they are all disabled.
Trying to start NAV resulted in error 4002,519
Again, if the dial-up connectoid is cancelled, NIS will then start
without apparent issue.
However, when clicking NAV or the Firewall icon in the system tray to
call up the 'control panel', the machine would again try to dial-up to
the internet by displaying a DUN dialogue connection box.
I have run a full system scan with no viruses found, and have all the
latest updates applied.
Can anyone shed light on where I might look to find out what is trying
to connect to the internet?
I haven't run any Spyware removal tools at present, but couldn't find
anything obvious in MSCONFIG or the "RUN" entries in the registry.
TIA
