preventing/removing unwanted BHOs

one thing I can't stand from 3rd party software is whenever it installs
browser help objects (BHOs) without my consent.

I consider 3rd party BHOs to be quasi-adware. BHOs are like
"button/icon/menu" ads.

sometimes the only way to remove a BHO is by completely uninstalling the
software.

is there a way to remove BHOs (especially the ones that are added into the
drop down menu)?

whenever a software tries to add BHOs without consent, is there a way to
detect it & prevent it without using a 3rd party antispyware? or is <a

thank you Galen!

for introducing BHODemon! it will prove useful. but, does it remove
installed BHOs in the drop down menus of IE?

AND, as I originally inquired, is there a 'non-3rd-party-software- solution?
if there isn't, Microsoft should consider giving users full control against
all kinds (buttons/icons/menu items) of unwanted BHOs with "IE 7".

No non-third party solution that I'm aware of other than carefully reading
each application's installation and not installing stuff that doesn't give
you the options. It should, I believe, cover stuff add in the drop down menu
as well. As for IE 7 take a peek here:

1. Go to Tools | Internet Options | Advanced and uncheck "Enable third
party browser extensions".

2 In WinXP SP2 you can disable individual addons: Tools | Manae
Addons.ons.

3. Microsoft Anti-Spyware (beta)

hi again Galen!

thanks for that link!

I liked the idea of separating 3rd party BHO's into their own toolbar. I
also would like to be able to completely delete (absolutely no traces) them
from my computer! I hope that IE 7 will have improved BHO management (with
options to install, activate, deactivate, delete, etc.).

thanks Frank,

but, if you read back to the origin of the thread I've already the 1st 2 of
your tips. the 3rd, I won't do. I haven't and won't install ANY antispyware
or antivirus in my own PC & laptop. it just slows down my low tech PC &
laptop.

after personal experience, I've managed to keep my current IEs from being
bastardized by BHOs.

I still have some friends who don't seem to learn how to prevent BHOs from
being added to their IE. the BHODemon will help me remove them from my
friends PCs.

I started this thread, in hopes to find direct (no 3rd party software)
solutions; even if it means that I have to do a little IE tweaks.

but regardless, thanks for your reply!
