Preventing outlook from wiping deleted items.

My Outlook has been wiping my deleted items folder of emails that show having
been read. How do I get it to go back to the default setting where I choose
when to wipe the delted items folder?

Do you have the option enabled to empty the Deleted Items folder upon exit
from Outlook?

Are you using auto-archiving (to [permanently] delete old items)?

Are the items still there but hidden because your view for that folder hides
read items?
