When my niece and nephew come to visit, I let them use my PC. I have created
their own Win XP sign on, but in the past they have downloaded various
software while surfing the internet. I want them to freely surf the net, but
I do not want them to download any software. How can I disable downloading in
IE6? Any info would be appreciated.

You can use the little script here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm line 254 on the right to
enable/disable downloads per user w/ XP.

Or you can disable downloads in IE's Security settings - Tools....Internet
Options...Security tab, Custom button - then lock out the Internet Options
by this registry change in their account:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Restrictions]
"NoBrowserOptions"=dword:00000001

Hi choppertech :-)

See if this will work for you:

Disable File Download in Internet Explorer (All versions)

Hope this helps.

Log-in to the account you want to disable downloads on. Run the script.
Your anti-virus program my catch it as malicious because it writes to the
registry. You'll get a little pop-up that downloads are disabled. Run it
again to reverse it, and a pop-up will say downloads are enabled.

Jon,

I successfully ran the script.....now...how do I reverse it? How can I
enable downloads again? Thanks for all your help by the way....

Hello everyone,

This post was very useful, however I do have a question.
This switch is just meant to be a shortcut to the tools/security... It
therefore can be easily reversed by anybody with the minimum knowledge.
I do need to prevent the reversal of the non-downloading policy because it
is the front desk of a hotel and I get tired of removing yahoo games and co.
Editing the registry does not do it for me since I do not have the
restriction file under internet explorer. I only have from default to url....

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance

The best thing I can think of is to change the setting in IE's security to
disable downloads, then edit the registry to prevent access to the security
tab - http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/797/

Or do it directly - http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/901/

If you are worried that someone could then reverse the registry change -
delete regedit from the machine, or just move it to a disk/floppy to use
later.

The group policy setting, from what I can see only disables downloads that
are not "user initiated".

Thank you jon, will give it a shot...

cheers
