Preventing access to online virus scanners and Microsoft...

I have read round this as much as I can and I don't seem to have cracked it.
Neither IE or Firefox can access the windows update site, or any online
virus scanners, I use (now after reading this forum) Avast and Spy Blaster.
I think it may be something to do with the HOSTS file, but I did alter it as
advised and still nothing.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

You could probably add AdAware and Spybot S&D to that list of
anti-malware programs. Oh, Firefox - and any other browser except IE -
probably will not work at the Windows update site.

If you open the HOSTS file with a text editor (Notepad?) is there a
listing for microsoft.com? For anti-virus sites such as symantec.com
and others? How did you alter it "as advised?"

If there are problems in the HOSTS file, after fixing it consider making it
read only. Remove the read-only setting only when installing programs that
actually need to add something to it.

Thanks for that suggestion. I have made it read only now and the matter has
been resolved.

Thanks for the help, I did manage to download a HOSTS file and it worked
when extracted...I think I saved it as a different file format (duh!)
originally, hence it not working. The 'as advised' bit was reading a
helpful reply to other posts.
It is a shame that Firefox can't get the windows updates, because I really
can't stand IE!!
Thanks for the help.

You can go to the download site and get the updates from there but I
have found that microsoft pages load slow using firefox.I always use IE
when I need to use any microsoft sites.

Download Spybot Search+Destroy here:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Read this:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/tutorial/index.html
Update and run Spybot (enable all protection).

You need to scan your system.
In Windows Explorer, set Folder Options to “show all files”.
Clean out all temp, cache, ect. files.

Download BeClean here:
http://boozet.xepher.net/beclean/

You may have to disable avast to run Sysclean.

Download Sysclean from here:
http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/tsc/sysclean.com
Read this(it tells you how to use it!):
http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/tsc/readme.txt
Reboot into safe mode and run Sysclean, write down results, then reboot
normally.
If offending file is in “restore” read this:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2001111912274039?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

See my site for more info.

actually, you can just go find them and download the patches normally, then
apply them. But its not automatic.

It is a shame that Microsoft won't support Firefox with their Windows
update system, eg by removing the requirement of applying ActiveX
controls.
