Prevent Windows Update (reconfigure)

In view of the current problem associated with the Update KB835732 from Microsoft, I want to try to reconfigure my Windows update settings. I'm running WIN2K Pro and am logged in as Administrator.
Does anyone know how to reconfigure the Windows Update programme to avoid my system automatically taking a download from Microsoft EXCEPT when I wish to and how do I rid myself of the New Updates Waiting advisor that appears in my system tray that is hovering to install/reinstall the above catastrophic update
Will be pleased to receive any help on this topic/subject
Peace to all !!!!!

Start->Programs->Administrative Tools->Component Services->
Automatic Updates

Stop process if running
Set 'Startup type' as Disabled

Only use Admin account for administration. Create for yourself
a User account for intermet acess, mail, etc

You don't need any updates, critical or otherwise, if you're
behind a good firewall, just make sure you have the latest
service packs. As to uninstalling these patches won't
'Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs' remove them?

Hi Alan - thanks for your initial advice, I appreciate it very much
Firstly, re uninstalling KB835732 when I initially installed it and hit the "wall" after rebooting, I used my Roxio GoBack software to revert my C drive and I have not allowed the update to reinstall since but the install icon is still lurking in my system tray waiting for me to accidentally drop on it and install it again. I would like to get rid of it if possible - but how
Secondly, I couldn't find "Component Services" via your suggested route but I did locate it in Documents & Settings -> Start Menu -> Programmes -> Administrative Tools -> Component Services. However, I then couldn't find Automatic Updates despite doing a Search in Files & Folders, so I am still stuck and I would appreciate your further advice if possible
Sorry I must sound a bit of a mutt as regards some of the higher levels of accessing software, but look forward to your reply
Kind regard
Roy

If it's an icon in the system tray, it's probably a shortcut located
at c:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\
Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\ ..and you can delete it.

Right-click on Taskbar, select Properties, select Advanced, select
Start Menu Settings: "Display Administrative Tools"

...then StartButton->Programs->Administrative Tools->Component Services

Double-Click on "Automatic Updates" (third line from top, on mine)
Stop (if running) Set as Disabled

I'm going to be away for a while from noon tomorrow as I'm going
into hospital for an operation (hip replacement).
