I changed something, but dont know what. When I reboot, the previous entries
from START|RUN are cleared. What do I need to do so the items are not
cleared? thanks william

Start Menu RUN history (RunMRU) is cleared on every restart
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/runmru.htm

RunMRU listing - Sources
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rundel.htm

Besides the Run MRU (Most Recently Used) list, this also clears...

IE History, AutoComplete, Clear the TIF, Clear the Run MRU, Typed
URL's and Clear List:

XP Start Menu:
You have to switch to Classic long enough to get the Clear button.
Right click the Start button | Properties | Select Classic Start Menu |
Customize button | Clear button | Click OK | Select Start menu | Click Apply
|Click OK

Classic Start Menu:
Right click the Start button | Properties | Customize button | Clear button

Clear button
[[Removes the list of recently accessed documents, programs, and Web sites
from the Documents menu.]]

The XP Start Menu Clear button does not clear the Run MRU. The Classic
Start Menu Clear button will clear everything in the Run MRU.

Thanks for the reply Wesley. This unfortunately, did not solve my problem.
I added the ClearRecentDocsOnExit string, but this had no effect. (see
attached) The REGEDIT also did not show a MRU. I muset be iin the wrong
place or something is dreadfully wrong?

I don't understand, William.

When/how did you get the...
File not found!
The file you requested does not exist. It may have been deleted or the URL
is incorrect.
....error?

What were you doing when you got the error?

System Mechanic, Fresh UI, Disk Cleaner & MRU-Blaster can all clean out the
Run Dialog MRU. There are also other utilities that can also clean out the
Run Dialog MRU.

Like I stated in my first post, manually clicking the Clear button can also
clean out the Run MRU.

TweakUI has these settings, the second one which can clear it:
Allow Recent Documents on Start menu corresponds to NoRecentDocsMenu.
Clear document history on exit corresponds to ClearRecentDocsOnExit.
Maintain document history corresponds to NoRecentDocsHistory.

If XP Pro, Group Policy has these settings, the third one can clear it:
Remove the Documents menu from the Start menu; NoRecentDocsMenu.
Do not keep history of recently opened documents; NoRecentDocsHistory.
Clear history of recently opened documents on exit; ClearRecentDocsOnExit.

The Value Name: ClearRecentDocsOnExit can exist in two registry keys.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
and/or
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

If either one exists and is set to 1, the Documents menu is emptied when the
user logs off and clears the Run history.

PART 1 -it took me awhile to figure out what you were referring to RE: file
not found.. What it was was; I attempted to give you a screen shot of the
REGEDIT that I was working on and the screen shot URL gave you the file not
found errror. I guess I didn't pass it on right. But ta ta ta

Part 2 - your second post added
"HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer" and that
was my problem. "ClearRecentDocsOnExit" was set to '1' here while
"ClearRecentDocsOnExit" did not exit on HKCU which was mentioned as a place
to look in your first post. As soon as I changed HKLM to zero my problem
went away. But I wanted to figure out what file not found was referring to
before I responded.

OK, problem is solved and I thank you for your time and patience.

As a follow up to Part 1 and my attempt to send you a screen shot, it is
allowed to pass a URL from www.postthatpix.com in this forum?

Hi William,

I see the problem now. Duh.

http://postthatpic.com/files/1827/runMLU.JPG[/IMG

[/IMG became part of the url, so the url didn't work.

http://postthatpic.com/files/1827/runMLU.JPG is the correct url.

I see it now. All that screen shot shows is...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer
Value Name: ClearRecentDocsOnExit
Data Type: REG_BINARY
Value Data: 00

Two things wrong there. The Value Data should be 0, not 00. And the Data
Type should be a REG_DWORD not REG_BINARY. If things are working right you
can leave it as it is. Or just delete the ClearRecentDocsOnExit Value Name,
which is the same thing as being set to 0.

There is no need to take a screen shot anyway.

To copy a registry key name.

1. In the registry tree (on the left), click a registry key.
2. On the Edit menu, click Copy Key Name.
3. Paste the name of the registry key into another program or document.

Or...

1. In the registry tree (on the left), right click a registry key.
