If I set up a report with for example 3 columns, based on a table of names,
addresses etc, then close it down or add a name to the table, I find that on
reopening - the report will default to single column, it will lose any
amendments in Page Setup such as margin changes etc. Why? Even though I save
in both design view and worksheet view.
I am using Access 2000.

If you are using Access 2000 this is a known bug and is documented in the
Microsoft Knowledgebase articles:

240826 'Lost Printer Settings when Name Autocorrect is turned on'
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;240826
245021 'List of Fixed Problems in Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a)'
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;245021

Turn off the Name Autocorrect feature as a temporary 'fix'.
To turn off this feature go to
Tools|Options|General

Then download and install the Service Release 1/1a.
