Hello,
I have Windows XP Pro on standalone machine. When I use the Search for File
function my list is displayed OK. However, once the search has completed my
System repeatedly grinds to a halt as the search is automatically
re-initiated. I have a 2.2GHz machine with 512Mb of RAM and yes my machine
grinds to a halt as Explorer grabs 85-95% of my CPU !
It doesn't seem to matter how many times I hit the <Stop Search> button as
*every* few seconds the search just kicks in again, and again, and again...
It's driving me nuts ! I need ideas on how to effectively kill a search and
leave my original list intact ?
BTW, I think I know *why* it's doing this: Every time there's a write to my
HD the search wants to see if anything else should be listed. Yes ? Yet it's
not quite as simple as just checking those particular files that are being
newly written/deleted. *All* 6 partitions on my 2 HD's are
re-searched...again, and again, and again. Also, the Indexing Service is
disabled.
I'll accept ideas on 3rd party alternative File Search utilities if the
operating system isn't up to it.
Thnx
Geoff
