Prevent Print Driver Download?

Is there a way to selectively prevent the download of a driver for a printer
to a remote windows 2000 or XP system when they choose to use a shared
printer that has drivers for their OS available?

It's taking a while to download drivers when adding a shared printer that is
on a server over a WAN. Can we change a registry entry or hold a key down
or something during the install of a printer on the workstation to stop the
driver download? Some of the WAN links are a bit slow.

Thanks - Anthony

Anthony,

I think that if you install a driver on the client of the same name and
architecture before connecting to the network printer, it will not download
the driver, even though it may be a different version.

If this is not good enough for you, instead of connecting to the network
printer, the client can add a local printer and add a local port with a UNC
name. You would no longer be able to configure all clients by configuring
the server though, as there is no longer a proper link between the client
and server.
