I need to send out a presentation that is saved as a *.pps and want to
prevent the users from opening the file as a *.ppt (if you save the file and
then do a file/open from powerpoint you can edit the file). Is this possible
to prevent this?

If you are using PowerPoint 2002/XP and above, you can password protect the
file from being edited, so that non-authorized user can only view and not
edit it. To protect your presentation, click Tools > Options.
Select the Security tab.
Enter a password under "Password to modify".
Click ok.
Re-enter your password and click ok.
Now, save it as a pps.
When user double click on the pps, it will bring up the slide show.
If the user tries to open it from File > Open, they will be prompted to
enter the password, or to view it as a read-only.
