The site a browser goes to at first and automatically when it starts is
called the "home" site in most browsers. You can change this site
yourself, in the browser options, or tell the browser to open with a
"blank page." (I don't use IE, so I'm not certain what IE calls that
"home" site.)
If the IE startup home site changed suddenly, perhaps that setting was
changed by some software, yes. But it is probably not a virus, and may
not be either dangerous or malicious. An antivirus scan would set your
mind at ease.
There are free downloadable tools you can use to protect your system.
Three very good ones (look for them via Google) are:
1. Avast! antivirus
2. Spybot Search and Destroy
3. Ad-Aware
