I do use msmssenger, but I don't want it to run except
when I tell it to. I found a place in the prefernces that
says "allow this program to run in the background. I
unchecked that, and messenger doesn't sit in th system
tray after I exit from the server. But msmsgs.exe still
loads at startup, and keeps running after I close the
window. How can I get this program to run only when
requested?

Open it, select Tools and then Options. Go to the tab General, and uncheck
"Automatically run Messenger when i log on to Windows," or something
simular. Finally, messenger can be disabled by going to Control
Panel/Add-Remove Programs/Add-Remove Windows Components, and deselecting
Windows Messenger. This opion is only avalible after installing SP1. If you
have not done so, go to http://www.windowsupdate.com and download it.

I've done that. But it won't go away when I exit. I have
to go into task manager and manually shut it down

I don't want to totally remove it, as I do use it.

Thanks for the timely reply.
