Is there a FREEWARE program that can prevent and/or fix the windows 98
taskbar from crashing?

Basically, what happens is sometimes it crashes wherein the icons in
the taskbar disappear (or at least some of them). I'm pretty sure
there is a freeware program that can fix this problem -- but I can't
find any place to actually download the program.

Any help/info would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks in advance.

its the shell (explorer.exe) thats crashing, not the taskbar (which it is by
the way); have you tried using a different shell such as GeoShell or
LiteStep ? There are many others. I've been using LiteStep myself for the
past few months and love it! Semolina or Cruising Chrissy posted an update
to LiteStep here recently, may want to google for it.

If you find yourself rebooting almost on a daily basis, or you
constantly encounter system crashes or lockups, then you may very well
be experiencing a memory leak problem.

I can't suggest any freeware (except Linux ha ha) but every time I
install Win98 I turn off Active Desktop and all the twiddly IE bits
via TweakUI. This does seem to make it behave a bit better.

The only fix is to reboot.

This was covered recently - in Win98 I think;someone else had the prob, and
so did I, so I hitched a lift.

It's alleged to be caaused by an installed shell extension, those right
click and menu additions which some progs install.

A prog called shellexview was suggested

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html

which allows you to see and selectively disable these extensions until you
get rid of the instability

Worked for the OP - and for me

The best approach to your crashing problem would be not a freeware
program, but a windows 98 service pack update, because most of the
crashes are result of windows bugs codes.A temporary solution would be
using the program Task bar plus

Anybody know where I can download the freeware program:

LiteStep

I've heard great things about it, but can't seem to find a place to download
it from.

Well, there is a freeware prog called "Correctif Explorer".
Afte installed, you are able to protect this kind of crash, allocating
differently memory for the iexplorer.
The second option is the possibility to recover the disappered icons
from the taskvar without rebooting !

I'm sorry I haven't a link to download it but I'm sure you'll find it
with Google.

Anyway as others said, if you've a lot of crash, adding this freeware is
not really the solution..
