Presenters View Troubleshooting

When I follow the directions for Presenters View, the 2nd monitor only shows
my screen saver in black and white. I can't even get ppt to show up. Nothing
I do changes this problem. Any suggestions? (I'm working on a Dell Inspiron
6000, Powerpoint 2003).

That's a tough one to troubleshoot in a news group. It's probably not
a problem in PowerPoint, but rather a setup problem with your video
adapter. You don't say exactly how you set the adapter, but the first
thing I would check is that the setup is for 'Extending' the Desktop
to the second display and NOT 'Cloning' it. Beyond that, someone with
direct knowledge about the idiosyncrasies of Dells might be of more
help. You might try a web search for dual monitor display problems
with Dell computers. Check for the exact video controller with which
the Dell is equipped.

I agree with Tom that this is a difficult one to solve without the physical
computer in front of me. Cpould you let us know which directions you
followed? And double check that in slide show -> set up show you have
powerpoint set to display on second monitor (not primary). Could you walk us
through excatly what you did to connect the projector too?

For what it's worth I have an insprion 6400, ppt 2003 and an ati mobility
radeon x1400 video card and presenter view works for me so I'm sure we can
get you there :-)

This sounds hopeful. Here's what I did.
I went to Control Panel, Display, Settings. The screen now reads "display
properties). I changed the display to 2. (Multiple Monitors) on ATI MOBILITIY
RADEON X300) and checked the box "Extend my Windows onto this monitor. I then
hit apply.
The laptop's screen goes black and then shows whatever was on the screen
before I hit reply. HOwever, the 2nd monitor has a very weird version of my
inital opening window with my background.

then I went into PowerPoint, slideshow, set up show and checked the "show
presenter view" box.

And that's it. I never saw anything remotely related to Powerpoint on my 2nd
screen even if I could see it on my main screen.

Aha! You need to set the second display to clone rather than extend. Extend
gives you 2 monitors worth of view (so you can drag windows onto the second
monitor/projected image). Sorry, I'm not very good at explaining but

Hope that sorts it. BTW I use the Catalyst control centre and I have to
right click on the picture of the 2nd monitor in the displays manager
section to select clone - but then again we may not have the same driver and
we don't have exactly the same card. I only mention it as it took me ages to
find the setting :-)

Actually, if srh wants to use the Presenters View the desktop MUST be
set up to extended, not cloned. Cloning shows the presentation on
both monitors. As of version 2003 (I think) there is now a setup that
shows a control console on one half of the 'extended' screen and the
presentation ('fullscreen') on the other half. Which half is which
depends on how it is setup in PPT.

From the description of the setup and symptoms, I would say either one
or both of the individual settings for the two monitor's resolution is
miss-set or an updated driver for the video controller is in order.

However, as I said, it's hard to troubleshoot this kind of a problem
through a ng discussion. An on-site IT or computer hardware savvy
person could do this faster/easier.

You are absolutely right and I'm a complete idiot. The only defence I have
is... er, being a bit blonde? No, I had just returned from doing a session
with a client and had had to change my settings to clone but that's because
I *don't* use presenter view, not because I do. D'oh!

OK...so I changed the resolution settings and now have a great picture of my
screen saver on the 2nd monitor, but when I boot up Powerpoint, the 2nd
monitor only shows my screen saver and that's it. (Not too useful when I need
show the Powerpoint presentation). What's next?

In the slide show -> set up show dialogue can you see the second monitor in
the 'display slide show on' drop down? Or does it say 'primary monitor' and
is greyed out?

I can access both monitors, it's just that teh secondary monitor only shows
my screeen saver and nothing else...even when I go to another program such as
Powerpoint. Got suggestions? Thanks.
 
So can you drag windows onto your second screen?

I'm not sure you quite answered my question - if you open powerpoint then go
to the slide show menu then set up show, can you see the second monitor in
the 'display slide show on' drop down? If not, what can you see?

I don't see anything on the second monitor except my screen saver. Even when
I open powerpoint and go to set up slide show and click on presenters' view,
I only see my screen saver (which I can only see when I go to desktop).
