What you do is either change the file extension in Windows Explorer from
..ppt to .pps or you do a "File", "Save as" and save it as a PowerPoint Slide
Show (click the dropdown arrow on "Save as type"). However, keep in mind
that they can still open PowerPoint, then open the PPS file (in Edit Mode).
If you are really looking to protect a presentation so they can't get to it,
holler back and I'll send you a link to a product that works great for it.

Hi Bill;

i was told this by someone else:

There is only one way that I know that this can be done. First, you can run
"Pack and Go" on the file menu. Be sure to embed true type fonts >and
include the viewer (this will enable individuals without PowerPoint to view
the presentations). Provide the instructions for unpacking the >presentation
for the user. A very clever person will be able to convert the file to a an
editable file, but you have to know what you are doing.

so i ran the Pack & Go, went through the steps, but at the last step (
Finish ) , a window popped up and said " powerpoint couldn't copy the set up
program". and so it wouldn't do it. do you have any ideas what is wrong?

thanks for any help

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello,

PowerPoint does not have the specific capability that you are looking for.
Currently, if you can open/view a presentation you can view it in edit mode
(not just slide show mode). Saving as "PowerPoint Show (*.pps)" is a
partial solution that is only effective when the presentation is opened via
the operating system shell (Windows Explorer, e-mail attachment, etc.) and
does not restrict viewing to only slide show if the presentation is opened
up using the File -> Open command (or task pane). This is because a *.PPS
file is identical to a *.PPT file (only the file extension is changed).

If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that PowerPoint should
provide a way of restricting access to presentations so that they can only
be viewed in "slide show" mode, don't forget to send your feedback to
Microsoft at:

As with all product suggestions, it's important that you not just state
your wish but also WHY it is important to you that your product suggestion
be implemented by Microsoft. Microsoft receives thousands of product
suggestions every day and we read each one but, in any given product
development cycle, there are only sufficient resources to address the ones
that are most important to our customers so take the extra time to state
your case as clearly and completely as possible.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions).
