I have a Compaq Presario 1260 with 160MB RAM and I tried to install
win2000 by booting from the win2000 CDROM but the installation hangs
while switching to the graphical section (when "Setup Is Starting
Windows" screen appears).

I've upgraded the BIOS (ROMPaq - http://tinyurl.com/3gk4l) and installed
the Battery Controller/KBC Firmware Update (http://tinyurl.com/3gk4l)
but it still hangs! I've tried everything mentioned in
http://tinyurl.com/yqjcg and http://tinyurl.com/22h5g but it still
hangs! I've tried to install winXP but it hangs in the same manner.

Has anyone installed win2k on Presario 1260 and faced similar problems?

When you boot off the CD and start setup, it'll get to a prompt which
says "Press f6 to install 3rd party SCSI drivers" or something like
that in the DOS portion of setup. Press f7. It is an undocumented
feature AFAIR which doesn't install ACPI.

I have Compaq Presario 18 10 and am a complete novice. The problem is that the computer hangs after 10 15 mins use and the all I can do is disconnect power reboot and start up again which is not good for either of us.
I have deleted 500mb of temp files and that has alleviated the problem somewhat. What else can I do ? Note that on start up when I press ctrl alt delete I seem to have 12 to 15 programs running which again cannot be good but I don't know how or if or should remove them as on my other computer I only have one running. Can anyone help to resolve this problem. The programs running mean nothing to me except explorer and systray which should not be removed

First I would right click on the desktop and go to Properties. On the
Screen saver tab, go to Power Setting. In the Power tab make sure the
hard drive does not turn off. In the Advanced tab, turn off
hibernation. I have seen these cause some similar problems in the
past. Other than that is could be a hardware issue. Email us and we
can help further.

Computer locking up solid with no change in the screen and the only
way to restart it is a hard reboot is often a sign of overheating.
Take the case off and if it stops freezing or locking up, than thats
your problem. solve it any or all of these 3 ways.

1) run with the case open
2) Blow all the dust out of it
3) install a case fan

After checking heat issues, also try updating your chipset drivers and video
drivers/BIOS. If you're still having trouble, you can update the
motherboard BIOS.
