Hi Danny Boy :-)

IE, I get a Preparing to install window

had a hard time trying to clean up the trial install

any tips

It is possible that some files may have been damaged or corrupted. If you
have fully cleaned the Encarta files from the machine, you can run a repair
of your OS. If you have not fully removed the files, and perhaps there are
still some residual files in the Registry, you can run a registry cleaner to
make sure all the bits and pieces are fully removed. You might try the
following and see if it helps:

Be sure to make a backup copy of your registry first:

Registry Cleaner

If you have System Restore capability try to restore to a date prior to
installing the Encarta to undo any harmful effects. If don't have System
Restore, then try doing a repair of your system and see if that will help
set the files straight. As you didn't mention whicn version of Windows you
are using, just choose the proper instructions for your OS below:

You only need to uninstall those Service Packs that were installed *after*
installing IE6. You will have to go to the Windows Update and reinstall all
the necessary updates after the reinstall.

How to Repair Windows 98

Repair/Reinstall:

Be sure that your AV and firewall is disabled before starting:

The Internet Explorer Repair Tool

or.........

If you have not already done so, then you might try a repair of IE6 as
follows:

or

thanks but I am running WinXP SP2 with IE6

have cleaned the registry and all the files in the program files and windows
folder

when ever I fire IE or Windows Explorer, the Window Installer windows show
up and preparing to install and then closes

Hi Danny :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Use the Windows Installer Clean Up is recommended by MS. Download here.
http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe

If still no joy:

Go to the control panel
Open "Computer Management"
On the left there should be a tab labelled "Services and Applications",
click the + to expand it
Highlight the "Services" subsection of "Services and Applications"
On the right there should be a long list of services, under which is
"Windows Installer"
Right click on "Windows Installer" and go to properties
Make sure the start-up type is on "Automatic"
Press OK, close the Computer Management, close Control Panel
Good to go I hope this helped.

also…

Start>Run> type dcomcnfg,
Select Default properties tab,
Set boxes to Identify and Connect.
Sometimes it seems these get changed by something
No need to reinstall SP3 as according to Microsoft support
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q319624

For XP Pro

Right click on My Computer
Click Manage
Click Servies and Applications
Click Services
Scroll down to Windows Installer
Make sure the start-up type is on "Automatic"
Click OK and close out
Try your install again

also…

Try: Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 msi and enter

Hope this helps :-)

actually there was another problem but I could not figure out the cause,
only the solution

using a wireless adsl router to connect, and left the connection on
overnight to complete the download of Encarta 2005 trial. When I reached
home, I found no connection was possible and the address of the adapter
changed to 169.x.x.x
spoke to my ISP support and was told the only way was to connect the laptop
to the route using LAN cables. With no cables in hand, I disconnect the
router and using a ADSL modem to connect. After confirming that the
connection is good, I recoonect the router to my laptop, and now it works.
Funny thing is although I reset the router, the settings were not changed.

anyway I receive an email from Endeavors Support and the message was

Please ensure that your firewall or proxy allows communication on ports 80
and 443 to streaming.endeavors.com

I am using ZoneAlarm and don't know how to open port 443

Hi Danny :-)

I'm not sure what might be causing the problem, but, check some of the
information here and see if it helps:

Security Issues of Opening Port 443
http://planroom.tv/security.html

and..

http://www.chaminade.org/MIS/Articles/FirewallPortSecurity.htm

For XP:

Port 443 is for https (both tcp and udp protocols), and should be enabled by
default. You might have disabled it via a firewall program or with some
tweaking. S ince it's only the 98 machine that can't access the sites
requireing port 443, it might be the way you have the computer connected and
the way the accounts is set up.

Hope this helps :-)
