preparing to install

Pops up "Preparing to Install" whenever I run
ANY Microsoft Office product(word, excel, powerpoint).
It will sit there for hours - hit the cancel button
and it says "Canceling" - for hours!

I've tried uninstall/reinstall, ORKtools, and 'restore.'
Only thing I haven't yet tried is a 8wk old backup.

= Windows XP Pro SP2 & Office 2003

Is it possible that you recently edited the license key(s) in the registry?

You might want to consider a System Restore to a time when all was working
well.

oK, i did that (lost a month's work) and the problem is still there only
slightly better:
after a lot of "installing...canceling" application (word2003) finally
opens only to
complain about macros!
