preparing network connections

I was struggling with win2k "loading personal settings" phase taking ages
when logging on to my 2k3 server, so i set up the server as a DNS server.
This fixed the problem (i didnt reboot the server - it didnt ask to). I have
since turned the server off and added an extra HD. Upon rebooting it took
AGES to "prepare network connections" and then ages to "applying personal
settings". Eventually it loaded an then bluescreened giving the hardware
conflict problem. i shutdown and removed the HD but upon rebooting it still
took ages, i didnt wait for it to get past this to see if it bluescreened
again.

I then couldnt get it to reboot at all and discovered that the HD didnt
support SMART and this was causing conflict.I disabled this and it is now
rebooting, and taking ages.

What can i do to reduce this? is it a conflict or will it take this long
because of the way my server is set up?

Thanks a lot in advance

You mean make the DNS address of the server point to itself?

It is the server that it taking a long time to boot up, not the clients.

I previously had a DNS issue with the clients this is now fixed.
It is since making the server a DNS server that it now takes time to boot

Thanks

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Yes, that is exactly what I mean. DNS on your servernic(s) should *only*
point to your server-IP. It will speed up the booting of the server, believe
me.
W2K/ XP / W2K3 are all about DNS.

My forward lookup zone on my server doesnt mention my ISPs DNS IPs anywhere,
so im assuming it uses the ones it's automatically assigned in its TCPIP
settings.

If i make the server point at itself, how is it going to know where to get
any DNS information that my client machines request?

As i said, i dont need the server to be a dns server, im just doing all this
to improve boot speed, so if i put the DNS IPs of my isp on my clients as
well as the servers IP, will that sort it?

Im booting the server up now, so Ill try what youre saying when its loaded.

Thanks for all your help,

The ISP-DNS-Numbers should only be in the tab Forwarder of DNS-server.
If you set options 003, 006 and 015 in DHCP-server, Scope options (and 044
and 046 (0x8) if you have W9x, ME or NT4 clients), all the settings
including DNS will be pushed to the clients if they are set to obtain an IP
and DNS automatically from the DHCP-server.
Don't put the ISP-DNS-numbers on any nic, neither server nor client.

Thouroughly embarrased,

Hi Andrew,

That kind of thing happens to all of us.
But do try my suggestions as well.
