hello all,

in googling around for answers to my hotmail issue - see post below - i
landed at a forum & came across some questions on prefetch file; the answers
were to sometimes delete all that's in there as it "gets bloated from time
to time" - what are your opinions regarding this ?

many thanks

Won't hurt anything. Programs will start to run a little slower until
it rebuilds the prefetch file list but it'll be back to par in a day or
so. When you delete it, it has to be rebuilt again so it can prefetch.

personally I always run with PREFETCH turned off/disabled.
system is happier, and more stable.

go ahead , delete the contents of the prefetch folder, occasionally.
there is a major defect in its processing. windows fails to remove prefetch entries for programs that have been uninstalled/removed.
defect is still there in Windows 7.

for XP GOOGLE for a program called
windows-xp-prefetch-clean-and-control.exe

for Vista and/or W7, it requires a REGISTRY edit.

search for Prefetch. when you find the "3" places change each to "0".

BE VERY CAREFUL.

How does one disable prefetch?

Interesting little program, the
windows-xp-prefetch-clean-and-control.exe, I'm using XP. And I did
research the Registry edits. Thanks!

glad you found it interesting.
used it for years on xp.

I have a few questions about the program.

The "recommended" setting is "Monitor Boot File Launch Only" or I can
also Disable Prefetch. I would like to try that first. You've had no
problems with your prefetch disabled?

That sounds like a sex joke or something. Sorry.

The only thing I've done with the program is clean out the prefetch
folder but it's not filling back up. Is this normal?

I turn off my computer when I go to bed and then start it again in the
morning. Every since I used the program to clear the prefetch folder, XP
doesn't remember all of my desktop settings.

This morning it changed my Sound scheme. I use some custom settings,
like my own sounds, desktop settings. At the morning boot, XP remembers
some of them but it changed my desktop background photo and cleared my
custom desktop photos so I had to Browse to where they are located.

Is this happening because I cleared the prefetch folder?

It's been two days and two reboots since I cleared the prefetch folder
and it also remains empty.

I took at look at the registry key for prefetch:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters

The EnablePrefetcher value is set at the default. 3, which is All: The
prefetch caches boot, and application files.

Have I broken something?

No other changes were made to the system at the same time. I have used
the program to turn on full prefetch although that made no difference in
the registry setting and with one reboot the prefetch folder remains empty.

System Restore.

I thought about that but my latest system restore point is from last
Wednesday, the 8th of April. That seems like it's too far back for a
system restore?

Depends on what you did with the machine during that time, it's
something that you will have to decide for your particular case.

What would happen if I used my Acronis True Image Home 2009 to restore
the Windows Prefetch folder files from 11 April 2009?

My concern is I've booted a couple of times and the Prefetch folder
remains empty. That seems wrong?

The Task Scheduler service is responsible for writing a file named
layout.ini to the Prefetch folder, if Task Scheduler is not running the
Prefetch Folder will not populate.

Having just done a quick test I think that Task Scheduler is responsible
for writing all the files in the prefetch folder, it needs to be set to
Automatic start if you want the prefetch folder to populate.
