Does anybody know anything about the prefetch file in the
Windows Directory? I want to know what it is, can I
delete it completly, and will it really make my computer
run faster or is this just a myth?
Thanks

Frefetch stores information to allow windows to load programs faster. There
is no real need to empty it, as it will automatically delete and restore
information as needed. If you choose to empty it, you will notice that it
takes longer to start your App's. until prefetch has restored itself.

I do periodically delete most of prefetch entries. It did help in my case
with
Win XP home edition. Have also removed all entries, with no problem.
So is Win XP the only version that had a Prefetch in it?

Prefetch doesn't delete anything. It just keeps growing. That is why this
feature, which is meant to speed up things, can eventually slow the computer
down. Check any prefetch folder after the computer has been in operation for
5-6 months. You will find hundreds of entries, many of them for programs you
have long since uninstalled!
