preferred but not available wireless

On my home wireless network, my access point shows up as a
preferred network with availability, meaning I get the
little blue ring around it instead of the red x. Yet it
still doesn't show up in the available networks box. This
is on two newly imaged XP computers with all windows
updates, using Linksys wireless-g cards. Before imaging,
the wireless worked just fine. My Mac happily sees the
wireless and connects just fine, so there is nothing wrong
on the access point side of things. Any suggestions out
there?

Hi,

I had huge problems with my new XP Laptop and my Link-sys
wireless LAN (again fine for other non-xp computers).

The key for me was this:

1/ Windows XP has it's own wireless drivers which will
conflict with 3rd party ones of not turned off. Under
Network Connections and Wireless Network Connections,
right click, properties, Wireless Networks Tab and
uncheck 'Use Windows to configure my Wireless Network
Settings'. Start again with the configuration.

2/ Adding Windows XP patches can completely screw your
wireless settings - if you've patche XP then start the
configuration again with a NEW configuration.

Have fun,

J

I've tried it with using Windows to configure my network
settings, and without. The card was installed after I
patched up my machine with all the critical/recommended
updates. So it seems like I've already tried the two
things you suggested (thanks though!). Currently the card
is using the most recent set of drivers downloaded from
Linksys.

Windows did not install the drivers when I installed the
card, it detected the wireless card but was unable to find
drivers, so I had to point it to the downloaded drivers.
Curiously enough, before reimaging the machines, when I
installed the card, Windows properly detected it and
installed its own drivers, properly detecting the card as
an 802.11g card.
