I just did an upgade from xp home last on my laptop last night and wanted to
post my results.

#1 DO NOT DO AN UPGRADE

There are several reasons.

a. if you have a good deal of software installed, the upgrade could take a
while. It took almost 4 hours for me to do an upgrade, as compared to just
over an hour for a clean install.

b. There are still too many programs that won't run on vista. No roxio
product will run...period. Sony Acid family won't run either.

c. May get programs starting automatically that incompatible with vista and
they won't install.

d. Files are moved. This is a problem, you don't know where to look, and
have to search for them. Also, programs may expect a file to be in a
location and can't find them there.

e. Unable to uninstall software...Think this came from changes in the
registery.

f. Incompatible drivers...at least with a clean install, you won't have
this problem as much.

g. Some of the locations are messed up. When I opened up the computer
location, I got my drives, and my network locations. Was kind of irritating.

I was not pleased with my upgrade and ended up doing a clean install in the
end. Instead of doing an upgrade, I recomend that users do a file and
settings transfer, or moving essiential files to another location and then
moving things back themselves.

In general I like how vista took common locations like videos, pictures, and
downloads out of the my documents folder. But I thought my old directory
structure would have been kept in place. So it took a while to get use to
that.

I did not find these problems upgrading a previous build of vista. Only an
upgrade from xp.

BTW: Roxio Creator 8 version 8.05 loads and runs under compatability load.
Run as Administrator during load. Afterward it will run under user
priviledges. There are few issues if you are using Neato-3 CD labels which
cause the printing to clip the lower .24" of the image.
