I've waited awhile to get used to Vista, before asking my questions, so I
have a few. My basic question is what do I need to do before I suffer the
inevitable system crash. I am well acquainted with W98SE, quite comfortable
with W2000SP4, and have a passing acquaintance with XP.

While lurking in the NG's, I found out that I could use my old friend ERUNT
on my Vista systems. So I set this up as one of my first lines of defense.
I have ERUNT AutoBackup in my Startup folder to run at startup. Now for the
first question, how can I get Vista to quite sticking EAB into the blocked
programs icon? I hate having to allow it each time I startup. But it seems
to work fine other than that.

Next I set up System Restore. It appears to decide when it wants to make
new restore points, and delete old ones. Now for some more questions. Is
there a way to keep a Restore Point and not have the system delete it when
it chooses to? Also, I tried doing a system restore under Vista Home Basic
(I have Vista Home Premium on another computer), but it reported that it had
failed. I tried several more restore points (oldest to newest) with the
same results. I tried doing this under the Control Panel option of Backup
and Restore Center under a full boot of Windows. More questions: am I doing
something wrong or did Vista hiccup? should I have attempted the System
Restore in Safe Mode?

Of course I backup important files, folders, and data on a regular schedule.

And now for the big question, is there anything else that I should be doing
to prepare for that dreaded system crash?

Any and all help/suggestions would be appreciated,
Vista Newbie

If you are running Norton, etc, disable it before doing a System Restore.
If it still fails, try it in Safe mode.
