Dear subscribers

I'm managing a network with a W2K server and WXP clients. The network
utilizes folder redirection for My Documents, Desktop and Application Data
and moves these folders to the server.

One problem that I have is that when most users log of they get a
synchronisation error when they log off. The error is, in my opinion, rather
strange since it refers to files that belong to another user. When the user
logs off a message, at the end of the synchronization, similar to this is
displayed:

Offline files
(C0047\staff$ on C0047):
Access denied to 00000279.doc on \\c0047\staff$\other_user's_name\Application
Data\Microsoft\MSDAIPP\Offline\.

This is repeated for about three more files. Note that the "other_user's_name"
is not the name of the user logging off. It tends to be a name of a
particular user, no matter who's actually using the computer. The problem is
not intermittent, i.e. it's displayed at every log off.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards, Ola Theander

I think the problem lines in when you made the files offline, you set the
staff$ (incl all users) rather than the specific user himself
(staff$/username).

Hi Denis

Thanks for your answer. I'm not totally sure that I understand what you
mean. The folder redirections in the group policy is set to
"\\c0047\staff$\%username%\My Documents",
"\\c0047\staff$\%username%\Desktop" etc. So in that sense I figure that the
redirection is per user. I'll appreciate if you find the time to clarify
what you mean.

One more thing that may be of assistance; it seems like the problem started
when I also moved each users profile to the server by adding a redirection
path in the user account's Profile property. This path is
"\\c0047\staff$\%username%\Profile". It seems, though I'm not sure, that the
problem affects only the users with a Profile redirect. Note also that the
conflicting user, i.e. the other user owning the documents that's reported
in the failing sync dialog don't have a Profile redirect.

Kind regards, Ola Theander
