Tried to find out which version of PPTP being used on Windows XP, Windows
2000 (workstation and server) and Windows Server 2003 on Microsoft site, but
to no avail.

Would someone please tell me if it is version 2 (PPTP v2) or else?

Many thanks in advance.

Both are available. Pptp is easier to implement but technically not as
secure though it is still very secure if users use complex passwords and
mschapv2 is used for authentication which is the default for the for the
operating systems you mention. L2tp is more secure as the encryption tunnel
is built after computer authentication [which is not used in pptp] and
before user authentication and uses ipsec. However l2tp requires the use of
computer certificates for the VPN server AND VPN client and will not work
when either the client or VPN server is behind a NAT device. There is a
NAT-T client upgrade that can be used if the VPN server is Windows 2003. The
