PPTP Connections Randomly Stop Routing Packets

Running Win2000 at the office. Connecting via VPN from my WinXP laptop via
a DSL connection. Connection works great. However, sometimes the
connection stops working. This may occur while transmitting a file. It
still shows connected, but will not transmit/receive packets. I have to
disconnect, then reconnect to get things going again.

I've looked at Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 313560. The symptoms it
describes are what I'm experiencing. However, the hotfix is for SP2. I'm
running SP4.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Hello Jim,

I was looking through the newsgroups since our company
is experiencing the same problem. We are running Windows
2000 SMB sp3, and sometimes clients running Windows XP
sp1 get "disconnected". The RRAS still shows them
connected and if you ping from the XP machine the inbound
and outbound on the port changes. We put a sniffer on
the vpn endpoint and can see the packets going out but
not coming back. We don't have a sniffer on the SMB yet,
going to do that next. I checked the routing on the SMB
and the route is there for the XP VPN client, but
still "disconnected". If we reconnect the problem
sometimes goes away, but surfaces later on and not
necessarily to the same XP client machine.

Is this what you are seeing and have you gotten anywhere
on it? Email me directly instead of posting here.

Thanks,

Ed Quinn
