What is the deal with PPT2007 and local printer drivers?

I do not have a printer, I do not have printer drivers...

From my reading the posts it seems Echo's first answer to any post is "Local
Printer Drivers installed???"

So what is the deal with printer drivers and PPT2007? Has MS forced PPT into
using printer drivers to display fonts? Or what exactly is going on?

No, it's not my first answer to any post.

But it is my answer to posts about PPT 2007 not displaying things correctly.

PPT 2007 especially relies on printer drivers for display. You don't have to
have a printer hooked up, but you do often need a printer driver installed
and set as the default printer.

I don't make the rules, I don't make the software, I just try to help people
figure out solutions to their issues. Sorry if you don't like what the
answer is.

Then you WILL have trouble with PowerPoint. If you haven't in the past,
consider yourself lucky.

Because this is the most common cause for the problems she's posting in answer
to.

If we knew that, we'd be Microsoft employees and wouldn't be here answering
questions. We *have* been told by Microsoft's lead tech support people that
not having a printer driver installed causes problems. We've been told over
and over again by people who follow this advice that it's solved their
problems.

So. You can argue about it, or you spend five minutes installing a printer
driver to see if it solves the problem. Your choice.

I do not at all like the answer. Rely on some third party printer driver to
display stuff?? That's just... lame. Why does MS keep pushig me closer and
closer to going 100% mac?

I don't blame you for the answer, wasn't attacking you, don't get defensive!
I was an MVP, quit cause MS is a joke. I know what you go through on here,
very few posters realize what role you play... I for one appreciate the
feedback and help, and the fact you do it without much compensation.

Thanks for the reply, and keep up the good work!

You don't need to OWN a printer. There are some standard printer drivers on
the installation disc of your operating system, more are available if you
are connected to the internet. Just tell your OS you want to install a
standard printer. It will not check, whether it's physically connected. Just
choose any printer model randomly from the list, I tend to pick the HP
ColorLaserJet with the highest available Model No.

These problems are not new. Older versions of Office worked better, too,
with a printer installed. But in older versions, problems were more common
in Word than in PowerPoint.

Best regards,
Ute

Ok, you guys are misreading my intent with the "first answer echo gives"... I
was more trying to just point out that its a popular answer and I wanted to
know why...

Take a step back, no one was attacked, no one was questioned other than MS...

And I've never had a printer driver installed on any of my 97-2003
powerpoint laptops, and never had an issue... Why do they use printer drivers
anyway? (I know you can't answer that, its more rhetorical...)

So if I have a brand new laptop, no internet access, no printer, and I need
to use powerpoint, then I am just out of luck? (this situation happens all
the time on show sites...)

I paid money for this?

Well, thanks for the answers, as frustrating as they are! (not your fault,
its the junk MS builds)

"So. You can argue about it, or you spend five minutes installing a printer
driver to see if it solves the problem. Your choice."

Thanks for reminding me why I don't like to come here for answers... Post
simple questions and every assumes you're arguing, or mad at the MVPs... I
just want to know why.

Yes, the answer upsets me, I've paid a lot of money for what should be a
complete, stand alone software package, and its not.

Installation of generic printers is not an option. I will never use the
"default" drivers that come with windows because they are all old, and buggy.
Most of them have never worked with any printer they are indicated for, and I
have to download and install new drivers from a website anyway. Being forced
to rely on pre-installed drivers for anything is scary.

I guess I just need to shove a current driver for some random printer onto
my thumbdisk so I can make powerpoint work correctly. That's going to upset
all my clients who are "clean machine" freaks, but if that's how it works, I
guess that's what I do.

You want simple answers? We've got plenty of them, and I have found that
this is the best place to get them. Unfortunately, "why" rarely has a
simple answer so all we can do is speculate.

Fair enough. Thanks for coming back with that.

And believe me, I ... we ... DO understand how dumbfounding it can be to hear that
you can't reliably project a PPT show w/o a printer driver installed.
So if I have a brand new laptop, no internet access, no printer, and I need

Windows ships with a gazillion printer drivers; near as I can tell, you don't even
need the CD to install them. Use the Add Printer wizard, pick something innocuous
like one of the HP LJ drivers ( LJ III or maybe 4, PCL or PS) and let Windows set
that as your default.
I paid money for this?

I can't answer that one. ;-)
