I am trying to make text fadein or fadeout from a slide. i
haven't found the option. any help would be appreciated.

Try this to create a fade-in effect for text:
1. Select the text object (not the text itself, but the object, which means
there will be a box around the text, with selection handles).
2. Right-click the object (or choose the Slide Show menu), and choose Custom
Animation.
3. From the Custom Animation pane, choose Add Effect, then Entrance, then
More Effects.
4. From the Subtle list at the bottom of the Add Entrace Effect dialog,
choose Fade, then Click OK.
5. Set the Start option to After Previous.

thanks for the answer but i can't seem to find the "Add
Effect"

i am using ppt 2000
in the custom animation dialog,
- i have a box with slide objects to animate (one is
selected)
- i have 4 tabs: order & timing, effects, Chart Effects
and Multimedia Settings

i am under the Effects tab, i have 3 zones
- Entry animation and sound
- after animation
- introduce text

Any more ideas to get to the fade os appreciated.
thanks

Dick, only version 2002+ has those tools. Version 2000 has only the same
animation tools that 97 had. Also, it has no fade effect at all.

Which is fine for 2002 but the title says 2000!

Sadly, 2000 has no fade effect for text objects. The closest you'll get
are Random Bars/Horizontal or Dissolve, but I personally hate the
dissolve effect as it's overly blocky.

So it looks like with PowerPoint 2000, Dissolve set to Very Fast is the
closest you'll come to Fade In.

Ummm, not really. Version 2000 animations did not allow speeds to be set.
That feature was introduced in version 2002 also. However, slide transitions
in version 2000 did allow speed settings, but only offered only Slow,
Medium, and Fast, as they still do in version 2002. The only Very Fast
setting is an option in version 2002 for object animation.

It is a very different world in version 2000 when it comes to animations.

Over the weekend, I installed Office XP.
I am getting to know the later version of ppt.
Thanks for the help, very appreciated!

For fadeouts in PowerPoint 2000, you might try Dimming as described here:
