Hi,

I am trying to launch a ppt file from a Web page, but everytime I do it acts
as if it is a .pps file. My goal is to actually open the PowerPoint
application so I can see the notes fields and then manually launch the
slideshow.

I have gone to the Folder Options and changed the .ppt file association so
it does not browse in the same window.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi Cathy,
The website you trying to download the Power point file from it did make
this file as .pps not ppt extension.
Download the file and launch in power point interface and edit them, you can
save as ppt.
but some file does not work with ppt file extension in power point,I do not
know realy why, may be because of images and animations?.
and is your Power point application been configured to excute both extension
and what version of Office you are using.
Hope this helps

I am using Microsoft PowerPoint 2003. It is configured to recognize both .ppt
and .pps files. Also, the file I am trying to open is a .ppt (I created it).
Originally, the file was displaying in the browser window, but I changed the
folder options as suggested in another post.

FYI -- the file opens correctly on machines where I have installed the
Office 2007 Beta.

Hi Cathy,
It might be your PowerPoint not installed Properly on your system.
What happen when you save the File with .PPT and open it within PowerPoint
Application?, it could be also a virus on your system lurking arround!.
Try to be sure that your System clean and Uninstall PowerPoint and Reinstall
and see if that helps.
PPT is PowerPoint Presentation,PPS is the SlideShow and Standalone File you
can open ebevn you don't have Office installed if I'm understanding right.
You said You did try and associated the Files in the Folder Options, so did
you try to download PowerPoint Viewer from MS:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...27-43AB-4F24-90B7-A94784AF71A4&displaylang=en
It is strange behavior in PowerPoint.
Hope this helps

Thanks for your suggestions Nass. I'm actually seeing this on three
different machines (one of which has no contact with the others and all of
which are spyware and virus free). I think it might be a bug in PowerPoint
(not too terrible though). I also ran all the latest updates for Office, but
still no good. I just find it odd that the PowerPoint 2003 application can't
seem to launch from a web page.

Hi Cathy,

I've create a REG fix for this problem. You can download it from here:

(Tested in Windows XP SP2 & PowerPoint 2003)
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/temp/pptserver.reg
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/temp/pptserver-undo.reg (Undo file)

Note that REG files are plain-text files. If you want to view the contents,
open the file with Notepad. To merge the contents with the registry,
right-click the REG file and choose "Merge".
