I will be installing Windows 7 beta soon, hoping that it might address some
of the performance woes of PPT2007, which I'm still reluctant to use for live
presentations. Anyone out there giving it a try yet?

What performance woes are you having? I would have thought installing a beta
OS is going to cause more not less woes...

I don't think the OS is going to have a big impact on the performance of
PowerPoint. The overall configuration can, such as number of services/apps
running in the background. The hardware can have a big effect on how the OS
performs, which translates to PowerPoint. eg. is there pleny of RAM,
harddrive space, graphics card and processing power.

As for performance, transitions and animations are more 'responsive' in PPT
2003, and even better in PPT XP. But I have run numerous large venue shows
with PPT 2007 all without any issues (aside from me knowing things should be
happening a bit faster). We can hope for the next version of PowerPoint to
focus on performance.

But if you do run the Win 7 beta and PPT 2007, please report back on
compatability, performance, etc.

Lucy,
I have 4 systems with various configurations. (XP, Vista, PPT2003, 2007) and
all are extremely well equipped in terms of hardware--7200 drives, maxed out
RAM, 512MB on board Vram.) My Vista and XP running PPT 2007 is abysmal. And
yes, I have a local printer installed. I have a test file that I use to
compare performance between systems. If you could provide a way for me to get
it to you perhaps you could run it and see how it does. Maybe it's as simple
as changing a setting but so far I haven't found a satisfactory solution.

Troy,
Thank you for your response. I will report back on my findings.

Amy,

Because you have graphics ready video cards, are you running presentation
with the Hardware Acceleration turned on (the one in PowerPoint, not the
OS)? Do the video cards also have shared memory (eg 512MB onboard and 512MB
shared) - this will have a impact on performance in Vista (as it attempts to
use the shared memory, where XP seems to ignore it). And are you running on
a single or multiple monitors? If multiple, are you using presenter view? I
have found all will have a big impact on presentation playback performance.

I'm going to leave you in Troy's capable hands - he has *much* more
experience with working on different systems & pushing the limits than I do
:-)

Troy, it sounds like you too are a show operator?I have been a show operator
for about 15 years. Although not as familiar with the intimacies of
PowerPoint as some here (who are working at the code level . . . humble bow
to them), I am a fairly capable user and trouble shooter. Yes, acceleration
is on, no dual monitors, no running in presenter view.
I'm not really interested in trying to get PPT2007 to perform well on XP or
Vista anymore. I purchase at least one notebook a year and XP will soon not
be an option. I've heard of operators who've lost clients because of Vista
failures during shows.
I'm moving on and hoping Windows 7 delivers.
