about 60 of them are image files. is there a way to batch process it so that
the file size of the presentation is much, much smaller?

** Always tell us what version of PowerPoint you are using since this
affects what options you have. So, without knowing, I'll whimsically assume
that you have PowerPoint XP ....

Click on ...
- Tools | Options | Save (tab)
Unselect Allow fast saves
Click OK

Click on any picture, then...
- Format | Picture | Compress

Select the following options
- All Pictures in document
- Web/Screen
- Compress Pictures
- Delete cropped areas of pictures
Click OK
If the warning comes up, Click Apply then OK again.

Save as a new filename.

Check the size of the new file. You should be happier.

The old file was 23 mb, (* i mistyped) and now it's 16 mb, which is a good
deal less. Thanks.

The resolution is not so great, and I imagine I could keep reducing and
compressing. The client might wish to split the ppt.

But thanks a bunch, great help here.

Doing what B suggested is a pretty good guide to how small a presentation
can be without looking like a bag of spanners. i.e. you were pretty close
before.
There's a limit to what you can do, and with 60 pictures you've probably
reached it.

A few things that can make file sizes unnecessarily large:
Pictures inserted at too high a resolution (the biggy - I've seen 1 slide
presentations that are bigger than yours!)
Fast saves, as B mentioned
Inserted objects, e.g excel charts, that contain loads of excess data.
Ungrouping can help, if you're happy to lose the data or keep the original
elsewhere.
Saving with PowerPoint 95 compatibility.
Embedded fonts (size increase varies but can be surprising).
