.ppt- how to lock a layer down to prevent selection?

I have a large image on a slide and need to draw shapes on top of it. Can I
lock down the image layer so I can select and move the smaller objects above
it without selecting and moving the image? How?
 
You could put the larger image as the background image for that particular
page, allowing you to put and move smaller objects around

Looks like you might have PPT 2003.

In PowerPoint 2007 you can click on the Home Tab on the Ribbon and at the
far right on the Ribbon, click Select > Selection Pane to open the Selection
Pane. From there, find the object in the pane and choose to hide the
offending obeject. Don't forget to unhide it when you've finished. Seems
obvious but I've had some very funky things happen as a result of forgetting.

If you have that problem, you perhaps have not noticed that you can start
your selection rectangle from outside the slide. That way the image will
not get selected.
