When I load certain (the one's I use the most) powerpoint
files I get this message: "PowerPoint found an error it
cannot correct. You should save your presentation, quit,
and then restart PowerPoint."

Those same files will open on another machine also
running office 2000. any ideas???

I'm running win XP, office 2000. I have done all critical
updates for both.

Glen,
Thanks for the fast post. Sorry to report that it didn't
solve the problem. Here's the details.

I get the error message every way I try to open
select .ppt files. I can try to double click in win
explorer or FILE/OPEN in PowerPoint. I still get the same
results on this handful of files. Other .ppt files open
fine.

Here's what I tried based on the link you sent. Although
none of the situations described were exctly what I am
experiencing I tried them just to see if they would fix
me.

I deleted the two regstry files.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0

I disabled the MS Office Plug-in in Norton AV 2003.

I Tried to move the PDFMaker files in adobe 5.0 But I
only have the 5.0 reader. So, I don't have the folder
that is referenced on the Symantec help page.

Thanks for your help.

Boy, it sure sounds like the error which should be corrected by deleting
those registry keys and letting PPT run its self repair. (Assuming here
that you ran the repair after that as the article describes.)

Is there anything unusual about the file names of the presentations that
are giving you the troubles?

Yeah, I thought that too. But, it didn't change a thing.

No. That's what has me stumped. These are .ppt training
presentations that I use at least 2 full days a month.
I've been using them for about 18 months, occassionally
updating. They have .mpeg movies imported into them, if
that makes a difference. They all open fine on my Win98
Desktop.

Hm. The MPEGs won't be embedded into the PPT file, but I wonder if
they're causing the issue when you try to open the file all the same.

Can you try inserting one of those MPEGs into a new blank presentation
and see what happens then? Will they insert okay? Do they play okay?

Steve,

Can you try starting the machine in safe mode and running the presentation?
It won't look good but it will help track down the problem.

I deleted the two regstry files.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0

Just the \8.0 and \9.0 branches, I hope?
When you started PPT afterward, did it self-repair? If not, you should
start it and choose Help, Detect and Repair.
