PPT crashes when changing drives

All of my pictures are stored on my d drive. Beginning today, PPT constantly
crashed when I change from the default c drive "My pictures" to my d drive.
When I use the drop down menu to change to my d drive, PPT IMMEDIATELY
crashes. I looked in the error report generated and ppt seems to identify the
following problem: lmpgspl.ax. The only thing different about today is that I
installed some Microsoft security update.

Any ideas about what is causing this?

PS. If I move my pictures from my d drive to my c drive I am able to insert
them, but this is a big inconvenience, especially when everything worked fine
before. Ideas?

No. I am not trying to insert any video material.

In fact, PPT crashes when I simply change drives from the default C drive to
my D drive.

Can I detele the lmpgspl.ax file? Any further ideas?

Thanks.

http://msmvps.com/blogs/chrisl/articles/10633.aspx mentions that lmpgspl.ax
is the Ligos Corporation MPEG Splitter (a codec, I believe) and explains
that unregistering it might resolve playback issues with Windows Media
Player.

I don't know that this should affect things when you attempt to insert
pictures and change drives, but I'd probably try uninstalling the Ligos/MPEG
Splitter software and unregistering this specific file, lmpgspl.ax, and see
if that resolves things.

the drive in the dropdown, PPT crashes?)

Hi Echo S,

Thanks for this info. I still need your help, though. Specifically, what do
you mean when you say "unregistering" this item? Does this mean I need to go
into the registry and change a value? If so, from what to what?

More importantly though, you asked at the end of your response:

(Just to make sure, you're using Insert|Picture, and then when you change
the drive in the dropdown, PPT crashes?) YES YES YES -- and this only for the D drive. This is esactly my problem.

Further thoughts?

Just a thought.....

Apologies if I've not read through all this post.... but there is a slim
chance that when you "insert >picture" (if that's what you are doing) from
powerpoint, the 1st file powerpoint finds on your D: drive... is messed up,
or powerpoint just does not like it. (particularly if preview is ON). that
could cause ppt to crash and fall over.

cheers

Good question, Al!

Try this:

Go to Start, click Run, and type this:

regsvr32 /u lmpgspl.ax

If that doesn't work, you might also try

Start|Run, and type

regsvr32 /u "\lmpgspl.ax"

Thanks for confirming our understanding of the problem. It's only the D
drive, huh? Hm. What exactly is the D drive? For example, my D drive is a
CD/DVD drive. Is yours a CD/DVD, or is it a network drive or a removable
memory stick or an external USB drive or a second internal hard drive, or
something else?

Or perhaps on te D Drive. If the file is damaged maybe its trying to
associate with D Drive content

Hi Echo!

Thank you SO MUCH. This is exactly what the problem was. I copied the
regsvr32 /u lmpgspl.ax command and pasted it into the run box. BINGO. Now
everything is working fine.

Again, thank you so much. I am university professor, so I am very dependent
on PPT for my classes. The thought of not be able to quickly insert pictures
was very, very discouraging. My hat off to you.

Thanks again,

Al

Glad to hear you were able to resolve it, Al! Thanks for letting us know.

It sounds like it may have been a combination of the codec AND TAJ's suggestion
.. that is, if the first thing PPT sees when you go to the D drive is a file
that's going to call the codec up for preview purposes ... well, then, every
time you visit D, you see the puffs of smoke.
