After a .ppt file has been saved, if you go and look at it
has the microsoft dos icon and is a text file not a .ppt
file... any ideals why this is happening....

The file is not changing, the icon is. It happens to me on my 98 system all the
time. I just don't pay attention to it.

Also check your file associations in Windows. Perhaps you've got PPT
associated with Notepad or something.

BINGO!! I work tech support for a large corporation, dealing with MS Office how-tos. If I had to bet, I'd say that at some time or another you have right-clicked and chose Open With - Notepad (with the Always use... option). This causes all of the files with that extension (.ppt) to always try to open in notepad (or whatever else was chosen). You can always open PPT and then open the file because it recognizes "one of it's own"

Yep... gotta watch who you "associate with" in this old PC world!

I'm confused now. You said it is a text file, not a PPT file.

What is the file extension on these files? The *final* extension listed,
that is.

There's a difference between what's possibly the real issue (that is, PPT
files will not open when double-clicked, but will open if you open PPT
first) and the issue you described (PPT files become text files, which I
assume means that the *.PPT extension changes to *.TXT).

I think we have two different threads going on which are circling the same
issues. I think that you need to consolidate the information into just one
thread and give us all the details you have. As it is now, we're only
getting little snippets of information from you, which makes it nearly
impossible to troubleshoot.

Rename the file to xyz.ppt, then see if it will open by double clicking it.
