I open an existing file, press "save" and exit. Return to the Explorer
directory and the filename has been change.

Example: SDLC Training Matrial 071014.PPT changes to SDLCONV~1.PPT
The old file name is completely gone.

Using Windoes XP PRO v5.1 SP2 with PowerPoint 2003 (MS Office Pro 2003).

I can open the file fine and have been renaming it back to the original
name, but one of these times I'm going to forget and delete it accidentally.

Do you have any add-ins loaded? It sounds as though there may be some type of
content management software in the works here.

What add-ins are loaded?

There are only 2 COM Add-ins:
BtOfficeAddin.BtOfficeIntegration.1
Send to Bluetooth
MultiMgrAddIn.AddInDesigner1
Microsoft PowerPoint Presenter Tools

I do not recognize either of them. Do either of them look like they could
cause the problem?

The second one ships with PowerPoint -- I think it's part of Presenter View
or something. Anyway, it won't be causing the problem you describe.

The send to bluetooth thing could, though -- it is probably renaming the
files so the bluetooth device can understand them.

Echo's right, the second one is an MS one that's always part of PPT 2003.

Does the Send To Bluetooth addin have any kind of options settings, or can you
temporarily uninstall/disable it?
