PPT 97 file won't run properly on PPT 2007

I tried to run a Powerpoint 97 file on Powerpoint 2007 and it ran in a
completely unpredictable manner. The group animations were erratic
sometimes even splitting in the middle of sentences.

Is there a way of making a 97 file run reliably on Powerpoint 2007?

I would open the file in 2003, then save it in that format.
-optionally, you may want to round trip it thru HTML to clean minor
corruptions-
Then open it in 2007 and save it in that format.
