I have a PPT97 file with several linked Excel files. When
I ship this to collegues and they open it, PPT tries to
update links back to original directory. Instead, I want
PPT to simply look in the current directory for the
files. Is there a way to establish this "relative" link?

PowerPoint will ordinarily do just what you're asking for, IF the linked files
are in the same folder as the PPT file and IF the linked files aren't
available.

So for example if you're all on the same network with the original files in a
mutually accessible folder on a server, PowerPoint will find the linked files
there and use them in preference to local copies. If you rename the originals,
then it should find the local copies.

This will probably rely on their opening the PPT file by doubleclicking it or
using File, Open; it will likely fail if they use File, then pick a file from
the numbered list at the bottom of the File menu.
