When opening a PPT 97 file (under Windows 2000) in PPT
2002 (under Windows XP), line spacing of text sometimes
increases, running titles over body text, etc. The values
in the line spacing dialog box are correct, but the text
doesn't display properly. Is there a fix to make PPT 2002
read the 97 file correctly? Our company has many users and
we are migrating to newer versions, but can't do it all at
once.

It sounds like you may be having a problem with
the PPT 2002 auto-correct options.

This may be an issue of font replacement.

To check, open the presentation in PPT 2002 and go to Format/Replace
Fonts. If you see ?? beside any of them, that font is missing on the PPT
2002 machine, and PPT's replacing the fonts with its "best guess" for a
match. That can often cause all kinds of text spacing oddities.
