When I draw a simple rectangle shape, and try to change its height by
click-dragging any resize handle, it snaps to a size that I don't want. Same
result when I try to resize by inputing numbers into the format>size fields.
This is not a smart shape, or imported object.

Hi Laura

Do you have text in the shape? If so right click -> format shape ->
textbax -> make sure 'resize shape to fit text' is unticked.

Lucy

No text in shape, and I don't want any. Just need several plain rectangle.
but good tip, because I deselected this option and can now resize. Is there a
way you can set this option globally for different shape types? For example,
I'd like my callouts to fit to text, but not my rectangles.

Alt key didn't work and snap to grid was not selected. Lucy's suggestion
worked in reverse. Thanks, though!

Lucy,

Careful calling that stuff over there "beer"!

LOL!

The Abita Amber wasn't too bad actually. I'm looking forward to trying the
local brew in Seattle :-)
